Robert Fung’s Gastown – Tour and Reception
Tuesday, September 9, 2008 | 5:30pm
Fee: $100.00; includes tour and reception with complimentary wine and finger foods at the Salt Tasting Room

Join President of the Salient Group, Robert Fung, for a personal guided tour of his recently completed Flack Block and other current Gastown projects. This event is a unique opportunity to hear about Robert’s vision for the area and how his vision is reflected in his development projects. Heritage consultant for the projects, Donald Luxton of Donald Luxton & Associates Inc. will provide interesting historical information about the buildings, and project architects, Mark Ostry of Acton Ostry Architects and Gair Williamson of Gair Williamson Architects, will provide a detailed look at how the projects were executed.

Following the tour, enjoy a conversation about “the role of heritage conservation in area revitalization” at the recently restored Salt Cellar in Gastown’s Blood Alley. Gair Williamson, the architect for the Salt Cellar, will talk about the rehabilitation of this space over a glass of wine.

This event is of special interest to architects, developers, planners, decision-makers and all who are passionate about using heritage restoration to revitalize a historic neighbourhood. It is limited to 30 participants so register early.

The Stanley Park Hollow Tree: The Community & the Conservation of an Important Historical Artifact

Join Harold Kalman and Meg Stanley of the Stanley Park Hollow Tree Conservation Society (SPHTCS) for an evening of conversation on how the community has taken on the conservation of the Stanley Park Hollow Tree. Kalman and Stanley will present fascinating information on the history and significance of the Hollow Tree, the reversal of the Park's Board decision to demolish the tree, the process that led to Heritage Vancouver and the SPHTCS forming an alliance to conserve this historical artifact and the techniques proposed for its conservation. The Stanley Park Hollow Tree is a cultural heritage resource listed on the Vancouver Heritage Register and recognized by Parks Canada as a Level One Cultural Resource in the Commemorative Integrity Statement for Stanley Park National Historic Site. The Stanley Park Hollow Tree has a special place in the memories of many Vancouverites.

Annual General Meeting & Reception

You are invited to attend Heritage Vancouver’s annual General Meeting and Reception in the Joyce Walley Centre at the Vancouver Museum. Following the election of officers, current President Donald Luxton will introduce special guests and exciting new initiatives for the upcoming year.

Our guest speaker this year is Bill Turner, Executive Director of TLC, The Land Conservancy. Bill will speak about the TLC’s mandate, their interest in pursuing projects in Vancouver and opportunities for the TLC and Heritage Vancouver to work together.

The evening is an occasion to mix and mingle with old friends and colleagues while enjoying a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception. Please feel free to invite guests interested in finding out about Heritage Vancouver.

 

A Conversation with Brent Toderian about Heritage in Vancouver

Heritage Vancouver once again welcomes Brent Toderian, Director of Planning for the City of Vancouver to review heritage issue of the past year and look ahead to 2009. We work closely with the City of Vancouver to find solutions for the preservation of our heritage structures and 2008 was no exception. We have been involved in city consultations on EcoDensity and the future of the heritage density bank, we worked with the city to create a future for our historic theatres and we celebrated the news that outriggers were unlikely to be added to the Burrard Bridge.

This evening is your opportunity to participate with Brent in a conversation on an array of heritage topics of special interest to our members. Join us in this stimulating conversation. Registration is at 7:00pm and the conversation with Brent begins at 7:15pm.

Heritage Vancouver's Victorian Christmas Party

Location: Roedde House Museum, 1415 Barclay Street (West End)

You are invited to attend Heritage Vancouver’s Annual Christmas Party at Roedde House Museum. Come and celebrate the season with members, volunteers, donors and friends in this West End historic 1893 house decorated in authentic Victorian style.

Local heritage authors, Chuck Davis, Eve Lazarus and Donald Luxton will have copies of their books for sale; an excellent opportunity to purchase a Christmas gift for that special person. There is no charge, just bring your favourite appetizer or dessert to share.
