Image - 42nd StreetHeritage Vancouver and the Vancity Theatre are pleased to launch our first ever Art Deco Film Night. Take a walk back in time with Vancouver’s own Dal Richards to 1933 when “42nd Street” hit Vancouver theatres. Discover the impact this film had on Dal personally, and on Vancouver’s music and theatre scene.

After the 35mm film print screening, plan to mix and mingle, chat about the movie and enjoy a no-host bar.

A smash hit for Warner Bros in 1933, “42nd Street” revitalized the popularity of the backstage musical just as the entire movie business seemed to be flagging. Mixing hardboiled Depression cynicism and Broadway glamour, the film introduced tap dancer Ruby Keeler (Mrs. Al Jolson) as a lowly chorine promoted to the lead role on opening night, giving rise to the legendary line, “Sawyer, you’re going out a youngster, but you’ve got to come back a star.”

Also featuring the fresh-faced Dick Powell, and Ginger Rogers as “Anytime Annie”, the film celebrates innocence but revels in innuendo. Its secret ingredient is dance director Busby Berkeley, whose inspired and frankly risqué routines for songs like “Shuffle Off to Buffalo” and “Young and Healthy” transformed the way that musicals were shot.

“Naughty, bawdy, gaudy, sporty, 42nd Street is a prime chunk of fantasy real-estate — not just a movie, but a novel, a song, a play, an act, an attitude, a dream, a racket, a rhythm, a way of life.” — J Hoberman, BFI Modern Classics: 42nd Street

Director: Lloyd Bacon;
USA 1933; 89 mins
Starring: Dick Powell, Bebe Daniels, Warner Baxter, Ruby Keeler, George Brent, Guy Kibbee and Ginger Rogers.

Image - BC Permanent Loan (1907)‘Heritage and the Arts’ is a new Heritage Vancouver cultural program that connects the visual arts with Vancouver's historic structures. It highlights Vancouver’s Heritage Areas and architecture and fosters opportunities for artists and designers to showcase their work.

We invite you to attend this unique social and networking event, the first in a series of ‘Long Table Socials’. Mix and mingle in the luscious interior of the Neoclassical Revivalist BC Permanent Loan Building (1907), located in the heart of Vancouver’s original Financial Centre. This elegant and opulently detailed building was designed by architects Hooper & Watkins to originally house the BC Permanent Loan Company between 1907 to 1935.

The evening will bring a careful selection of short films, graciously curated by the Celluloid Social Club. Also on program will be special musical talent, Vancouver’s Kick Evrything – a mixture of synth-drenched fuzz rock and acoustic folk – in performance, a special presentation from internationally-renowned artist Brendan Lee Satish Tang, whose ceramic series of work amalgamates Ming Dynasty-style porcelain with Japanese anime and manga, and a few other oddities.

The evening presents a rare opportunity to experience this historic building in the process of restoration, with several notable interior details, including a magnificent elliptically-shaped Tiffany-style stained glass skylight over the central hall.

Many of the original elegant features of this building remain intact and have been painstakingly brought back to life by Eric Cohen (Vancouver Architectural Antiques), who has generously sponsored the use of the BC Permanent Loan/Page Building for this event. Mr. Cohen will be providing a brief history of the building during the evening.

All proceeds support Heritage Vancouver’s initiatives to conserve Vancouver’s built heritage. Purchase your tickets early for this event as it will sell out quickly!

The 'Long Table Social' is facilitated by Superdelux, the Celluloid Social Club and the Design Foundation of BC.
