Walking Tour: Vancouver's West End Remembered

Location: Meet in front of the Manhattan Apartments, 784 Thurlow St. (at Robson)

Join Heritage Vancouver on this lively walking tour of the West End, led by Heritage Vancouver Board Member and museum educator Isaac Vanderhorst. Experience the history of the West End through the eyes of Isaac's ancestors, the Abbott's, residents of this well-known neighbourhood during the 1920's and 30's.

Based on family stories the tour will meander around the West End and will be interspersed with visits to threatened heritage buildings and successful preservation projects. Hear about momentous events such as prohibition and the Depression that marked the neighbourhood's past, long before the advent of today's high rises. You'll learn about the history of this unique neighbourhood, and will see prominent, heritage buildings as well as a few jewels off the beaten path.

Of special note: The historical houses and apartments facing demolition risk in the West End are part of our 2012 Top Ten Endangered List.
