Letters to City Council

Heritage Vancouver submits letters and position papers to Vancouver City Council on a variety of heritage conservation topics. We are pleased to be able to make these letters and related documents available as one more way of keeping our membership informed about some of our current heritage conservation initiatives.

+ The Burrard Bridge (1932)

Heritage Vancouver has been involved for a number of years in preserving the Burrard Bridge. A study (link below) commissioned by the City is one more step towards making sure that this landmark bridge retains its heritage proportions and features. The city is looking at creating more appropriate permanent barriers for the bike lanes on the bridge and at the same carrying out long overdue maintenance work. The one item we caution the city on is the proposed complete replacement of the bridge railings.

+ Beach Towers (1965/68)

Over the last year the new owner of Beach Towers, 1600 Beach Avenue in the West End, has been exploring development opportunities on the site. Although the proposal for  a new tower has been turned down by the Director of Planning, (link below) there is likely to be some form of increased development on the site. Heritage Vancouver is urging the City to carry out a Heritage Register evaluation and undertake a Statement of Significance prior to making any changes to this landmark modernist complex.

+ Opsal Steel Building (1917)

At a public hearing on July 20, Vancouver City Council approved the Rezoning, Heritage Designation and Heritage Revitalization Agreement for Opsal Steel located in Southeast False Creek at 15 and 97 East 2nd Ave. The renderings in Appendix G of the policy report (link below) provide a good perspective on the completed site. We look forward to the completion of the restoration of this important industrial site.
